â–º We firmly believe in the safety of our vaccines.   Vaccine Safety: The Facts
â–º We firmly believe that all children and young adults should receive the recommended vaccines according to the schedule published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and supported by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). LLPA schedule. CDC 2014 Vaccine Schedule
â–º We firmly believe, based on all currently available evidence and research, that vaccines do not cause autism or other developmental disabilities.
â–º We firmly believe that vaccinating children and young adults may be the single most important health-promoting intervention we perform as health care providers

The vaccine campaign is a victim of its own success. Because of vaccines, many of you have never known a friend or family member whose child contracted or died from Polio, bacterial meningitis, or Measles.  For those of us who practiced pediatrics in the era before many of the currently recommended vaccines were available we witnessed the devasating effects of bacterial meningitis, epiglottitis, overwhelming sepsis on a regular basis. Even older pediatricians saw and feared Polio until the early 1950's. Routine vaccination against many formerly dreaded illnesses like Polio and  bacterial meningitis has virtually elimainated these diseases in the United States and world. For pediatric physicians, the decision whether or not to recommend vaccinating children against these diseases is truly a “no brainer”, but for for parents, we recognize that the choice may be a very emotional one. Furthermore the success of the vaccine program can make some complacent about the value of vaccines when the disease they prevent appear to have disappeared. Such an attitude, if it became widespread, could and has lead to undesired and/or tragic results. For example, after a fraudulent “research” publication in England suggested a link between the  Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine and Autism many parents in Europe have chosen not to vaccinate their children with that vaccine or in some cases, any vaccinel. The fraudlent claim, which was later retracted and is not supported by any legitimate research, nonetheless, resulted in a decline in immunization rates. As a result there have been renewed outbreaks of Measles in Europe causing deaths and serious complications from the disease over the past several years. Likewise, in the United States as a result of refusal by some parents to immunize for various reasons, we have also seen the resurgence of several diseases that were rarely seen when immunization rates were higher e.g. Whooping Cough and Mumps.

We do not wish to scare or coerce you, but hope to inform you about the real hazards that children and parents routinely faced in the pre-vaccine era and to emphasize the importance and safety of vaccinating your child to prevent those issues from resurfacing. We will do everything possible to provide you with the information you need to understand why we believe vaccinating your child is a central and crucial component of preventive healthcare.

As providers and advocates for the health of your child, we do not feel comfortable with the decision not to vaccinate your child.  We feel so strongly about this issue at Lockman & Lubell Pediatric Assoicates that if you refuse entirely to vaccinate your child, we will respectfully ask you to find another health care provider.

Thank you for your time in reading this policy, and please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about vaccines with any one of us. We are happy to discuss your concerns about vaccines at your child's next visit.
